St. Joana's Day in Portugal

St. Joana's Day, or Dia de Santa Joana Princesa, is celebrated on May 12th in Portugal. The day is dedicated to St. Joana, the patron saint of Aveiro, who was a Portuguese princess from the 15th century and the daughter of King Afonso V of Portugal.

History

Joana was born on February 6, 1452, and later became known for her devotion to the Catholic Church and her pious lifestyle. She expressed a desire to join a convent but never did so formally due to political reasons. After her death in 1490, she was beatified by Pope Innocent XII in 1693.

Traditions

In Aveiro, where St. Joana is especially revered, there are religious processions and festivities held in her honor. The celebrations involve:

  • Religious Ceremonies: Masses and processions take place at the Monastery of Jesus in Aveiro, where St. Joana's tomb is located.
  • Cultural Events: Exhibitions, concerts, and other cultural activities are organized throughout the city.
  • Local Markets: Street markets spring up selling traditional foods, crafts, and other items.

Activities

People participate in these events both as an expression of their faith and as part of the cultural heritage of Aveiro. They may:

  • Attend church services
  • Join the processions carrying flowers and candles
  • Enjoy local cuisine specific to this celebration
  • Engage with community activities

St. Joana's Day is a blend of religious devotion and local culture that reflects the historical significance of St. Joana to Portugal and particularly to the city of Aveiro.
