Liberty Day in Portugal

Liberty Day, known in Portuguese as "Dia da Liberdade," is celebrated on April 25th each year. This public holiday commemorates the Carnation Revolution of 1974 that led to the fall of the Estado Novo regime, a dictatorial government that had ruled Portugal since 1933. The revolution was so named because almost no shots were fired and when the population started to congregate in the streets to celebrate the end of the dictatorship, carnations were placed in the barrels of rifles and on soldiers' uniforms.

History:

  • The Carnation Revolution was primarily conducted by military officers who were disillusioned with the authoritarian regime and Portugal's colonial wars in Africa.
  • It marked a peaceful transition of power and paved the way for a democratic government.
  • The revolution also led to rapid decolonization for Portuguese colonies in Africa.

Traditions:

  • On Liberty Day, official ceremonies include speeches by politicians and other public figures, military parades, and concerts.
  • In Lisbon, there is often a commemorative procession down Avenida da Liberdade (Freedom Avenue), which is attended by thousands of citizens.
  • The day serves as an opportunity to reflect on freedom, democracy, and human rights.

What People Do:

  • Many Portuguese attend celebratory events and concerts or participate in local festivities.
  • It’s common for people to display the national flag on their balconies or windows as a sign of patriotism.
  • As it is a public holiday, families often take advantage of the time off work to gather and enjoy meals together or go out for leisure activities.
