The December Solstice, occurring around December 21st, is the shortest day and the longest night of the year in Puerto Rico, marking the onset of winter in the Northern Hemisphere. This astronomical event happens when the South Pole is tilted closest to the sun.
Historically, indigenous Taíno people inhabited Puerto Rico and had their own traditions related to solstices, but much of this knowledge has been lost or assimilated into later cultural practices. The arrival of Spanish colonizers brought European traditions that meshed with local customs.
In Puerto Rico, as a predominantly Catholic region, December festivities are often tied to religious observances leading up to Christmas (Navidad). While there are no specific widespread traditions that celebrate the solstice itself, it falls within a period known as "Las Navidades," which is rich with cultural events and celebrations.
Parrandas: Leading up to Christmas, people engage in 'parrandas' or 'asaltos navideños,' a local version of caroling where groups surprise friends or family with live music and singing late at night.
Decorations: Homes and public spaces are decorated with lights and traditional symbols, like 'poinsettias' (flor de pascua) and 'arbolitos' (little trees).
Religious Services: Many attend Misa de Gallo (Rooster's Mass) at midnight on Christmas Eve or other church services during this period.
Family Gatherings: Families come together for large meals featuring traditional dishes such as lechón asado (roast pork), arroz con gandules (rice with pigeon peas), pasteles (tamale-like cakes), and coquito (a coconut-based beverage similar to eggnog).
On this day itself, there may not be distinct celebrations dedicated solely to acknowledging the solstice; however, its occurrence within the broader festive season means it's nonetheless a time of joyfulness and community spirit.
