Isra and Mi'raj (Isra Me'raj, Israa and Mi'raaj, Laylat Al-Isra wa Al-Miraj, Lailat al Miraj, Night Journey and Ascension to Heaven) marks the night that the Prophet Mohammad traveled from Mecca to Jerusalem, ascended to heaven and returned.

Shab e-Meraj in Pakistan

Shab e-Meraj, also known as Isra and Miraj, is an important Islamic event commemorated on the 27th night of the Islamic month of Rajab. In Pakistan, it holds a significant place among religious observances.

History:

According to Islamic tradition, Shab e-Meraj marks the night when the Prophet Muhammad embarked on a special journey. He traveled from Mecca to Jerusalem (the Isra) and then ascended to heaven (the Miraj), where he met previous prophets and was granted an audience with Allah (God). During this journey, Muslims believe that the Prophet received instructions on Muslim prayer rituals.

Traditions:

On Shab e-Meraj, Pakistani Muslims engage in various religious activities:

  • Prayers: Special prayers are held throughout the night as it's believed that praying during this time has significant rewards.
  • Religious Gatherings: Mosques organize gatherings where religious scholars narrate the story of the Prophet’s journey and discuss its significance.
  • Recitation of Quran: Many devotees spend time reciting verses from the Quran.
  • Charity: It is common for people to give to charity and help those in need as a form of seeking blessings.

What People Do:

On Shab e-Meraj, many Pakistanis perform additional prayers after Isha (night prayer), including Nafl (voluntary) prayers. Homes and mosques are often illuminated, reflecting reverence for this occasion. Families also prepare special meals, and it's common to visit graves of loved ones to pray for their souls.

While not a public holiday in Pakistan, Shab e-Meraj is observed with great respect by the Muslim community across the country.
