Ridvan in Pakistan

Ridvan is an important festival celebrated by the Bahá'í community across the world, including Pakistan. It is a twelve-day period commencing on April 21st and ending on May 2nd, signifying the declaration of Bahá'u'lláh, the founder of the Bahá'í Faith, in 1863. During this period, he announced his mission as God's messenger for this age at a garden in Baghdad, which became known as the Garden of Ridván (meaning "paradise").

History

The history of Ridvan dates back to the time when Bahá'u'lláh was exiled from Baghdad to Constantinople. Before his departure, he camped for twelve days in a garden that was subsequently named after this event. These days are considered the holiest for members of the Bahá'í Faith.

Traditions

In Pakistan, as in other countries with a Bahá'í presence:

  • First, Ninth and Twelfth Days: These are especially significant and often observed with community gatherings because they correspond with Bahá'u'lláh's arrival in the garden, the arrival of his family, and their departure towards Constantinople.

  • Prayer and Reflection: The period is marked by prayer, reflection on one’s spiritual life and reading from holy writings.

  • Community Gatherings: Members of the community may organize meetings or events to pray together and read from Bahá'í scriptures.

  • Elections: It is also a time for administrative affairs where local and national spiritual assembly members are elected without any campaigning or nominations.

What People Do

On Ridvan:

  • Bahá'ís Fast: This period follows a nineteen-day fast which ends just before Ridvan begins.

  • Social Activities: There may be social activities such as picnics or art events that reflect themes of unity and celebration.

  • Celebrations: Each day can be celebrated differently but often includes hospitality and sharing with friends and family.

The observance of Ridvan in Pakistan reflects both individual acts of devotion as well as collective celebrations within the Bahá'í community.
