Background: Kashmir Day, also known as 'Kashmir Solidarity Day,' is a national holiday in Pakistan that demonstrates support for the people of Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir and recognizes the struggles faced by the local population. It was first observed in 1990 on the call of Qazi Hussain Ahmad of the Jamaat-e-Islami party, and later, the then Prime Minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif declared it a public holiday.
Purpose: The day is meant to express Pakistan's political and moral support for Kashmiri separatists and to pay homage to Kashmiris who have died in the conflict. It aims to highlight the dispute over the region and seeks a peaceful resolution according to United Nations resolutions and aspirations of the Kashmiri people.
