Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights, is one of the most popular Hindu festivals.

Diwali/Deepavali in Pakistan

Overview: Diwali, also known as Deepavali, is a Hindu festival of lights celebrated with much fervor in India and around the world, including Pakistan. In Pakistan, the festival takes place on the 15th day of Kartik, the holiest month in the Hindu lunar calendar, typically falling in October or November.

History and Significance: The festival commemorates various historical events and stories from Hindu mythology but most commonly marks the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after defeating Ravana as told in the epic Ramayana. It symbolizes the victory of light over darkness and good over evil.

Traditions: In Pakistan, where Hindus form a minority community, Diwali is celebrated by:

  • Lighting Diyas: Small oil lamps called diyas are lit and placed around homes.
  • Decorating Homes: Many households clean and decorate their homes with rangoli designs.
  • Fireworks: Although less common due to restrictions, some fireworks displays may occur.
  • Worship (Puja): Goddess Lakshmi, known for wealth and prosperity, is worshipped during Diwali. Prayers are offered for health and happiness.
  • Sweets and Gifts: Sharing sweets and exchanging gifts among family members is a common tradition.
  • Community Gatherings: Hindus often gather in temples for communal prayers.

Despite being a predominantly Muslim country with some societal challenges for minorities, Diwali remains an important occasion for Pakistani Hindus who celebrate it with dedication to maintain their cultural heritage.
