Ramadan is a period of prayer, reflection and fasting for many Muslims worldwide. It is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar.

Ramadan Start in the Philippines

Day: The start of Ramadan in the Philippines is determined by the lunar Islamic calendar, which is based on the sighting of the moon. Since it is not a fixed date on the Gregorian calendar, it varies each year.

History: Ramadan is a holy month for Muslims worldwide, and its observance in the Philippines reflects the country's rich cultural tapestry, influenced by various traders and settlers throughout history, including Muslims. Islam was established in parts of the Philippines well before Spanish colonization, primarily through Arab traders who came to Southeast Asia.

Traditions: In the Philippines, Ramadan is a time for spiritual reflection, prayer, doing good deeds, and spending time with family and friends. During this period:

  • Fasting: Adult Muslims partake in fasting from dawn until sunset. This means refraining from eating or drinking during daylight hours.

  • Suhoor and Iftar: The pre-dawn meal before starting the fast is called Suhoor. After sunset, families gather for Iftar to break their fast together.

  • Taraweeh Prayers: Special nightly prayers called Taraweeh are held in mosques after regular evening prayers.

  • Charity: Known as Zakat al-Fitr, acts of charity are especially important during Ramadan as a way to purify wealth and help those in need.

  • Spiritual Activities: Many engage more intensively with the Quran through recitation and reflection upon its message.

What People Do: On the first day of Ramadan:

  • Many Muslims attend mosque services for communal prayers.

  • They share festive meals with family members for Iftar while exchanging greetings like "Ramadan Mubarak" (Blessed Ramadan) or "Ramadan Kareem" (Generous Ramadan).

  • Some may begin decorating their homes with lights or other symbols to mark the month.

The commencement of Ramadan also features increased social activity as communities come together both for religious observance and community cohesion.
