National Heroes Day in the Philippines is a public holiday celebrated annually on the last Monday of August. It is a day dedicated to honoring and remembering the country's national heroes who played significant roles in Philippine history, particularly those who fought for independence and freedom against Spanish, American, and Japanese colonizers.
History
The holiday was first enacted through Act No. 3827 on October 28, 1931, during the American colonial period.
Originally, it was intended to commemorate the Cry of Pugad Lawin (also known as the Cry of Balintawak), which marked the beginning of the Philippine Revolution against Spanish rule on August 23, 1896.
Over time, it evolved to include recognition of all Filipino heroes.
Traditions
Ceremonies: Government officials lead wreath-laying ceremonies at monuments of national heroes across the country. The most prominent is at Rizal Park in Manila, where a ceremony is held at the monument of Jose Rizal, the national hero.
