Mawlid, or Milad, marks the birth of the Islamic prophet Muhammed, or Mohamed, in the year 570 of the Gregorian calendar.

Maulid un-Nabi in the Philippines

Maulid un-Nabi, also known as Mawlid, is the observance of the birthday of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, which is commemorated by Muslims around the world. In the Philippines, a predominantly Catholic country, this event is also recognized among its significant Muslim population, especially in areas like Mindanao and the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM).

History

Maulid un-Nabi's historical roots go back to early Islamic traditions with various ways of observing it evolving over centuries. In the Philippines, Islam predates Christianity by a few hundred years and has been practiced since approximately the 14th century. The celebration of Maulid un-Nabi thus reflects both religious devotion and cultural heritage.

Traditions

On Maulid un-Nabi, Filipino Muslims engage in various religious and communal activities such as:

  • Prayer Gatherings: Special prayers are held in mosques where stories about the life and teachings of Prophet Muhammad are recounted.
  • Parades: In some areas, parades or processions are organized to express joy and reverence for the prophet.
  • Feasting: Community feasts are common where people come together to share a meal. It's an act that fosters unity and charity within communities.
  • Charitable Acts: Giving to charity is emphasized as it resonates with one of the key teachings of Islam regarding caring for those less fortunate.

What People Do

Muslim Filipinos may take time off work or from their daily routines to participate in Maulid un-Nabi activities. They attend mosque services, recite poems called na`ats which praise Muhammad, participate in religious discussions about his life (seerah), distribute food to others especially to those in need, and spend time with family.

In recognition of its cultural significance among Filipino Muslims, Maulid un-Nabi is also acknowledged by local governments especially where there is a large Muslim population. Public spaces may be decorated for the occasion and educational events highlighting Islamic history and culture may be organized.

The observance of Maulid un-Nabi serves as an opportunity for Muslim Filipinos not only to reflect on their faith but also to celebrate their identity within a diverse national tapestry.
