Inti Raymi Day in Peru

Inti Raymi, also known as the Festival of the Sun, is a traditional Inca festival celebrated on June 24th every year in Peru, particularly in Cusco. It coincides with the winter solstice and harvest time, marking the beginning of a new year in the Andean calendar.

History

• Origins: The festival was established by the Inca Emperor Pachacuti in the 15th century to honor Inti, the sun god.
• Pre-Columbian Era: During this period, it was one of the most important ceremonies in the Inca Empire, involving animal sacrifices to ensure good crops and a bountiful harvest.
• Spanish Conquest: The celebration was banned by Spanish conquerors in the late 16th century as they sought to convert indigenous peoples to Christianity.

Traditions

• Reenactment: A theatrical representation of Inti Raymi is performed at Sacsayhuamán, an ancient fortress overlooking Cusco. Actors are selected to portray the Sapa Inca (emperor), nobles, priests, and other roles.
• Ceremonies: The event includes traditional music, colorful costumes, and offerings to Pachamama (Mother Earth) and Inti.
• Rituals: While no longer involving animal sacrifice, modern festivities maintain symbolic rituals such as fake llama sacrifices.
