Martyr's Day in Panama

Martyr's Day (Día de los Mártires) in Panama is observed annually on January 9. It is a day of national mourning and remembrance for the victims of the tragic events of 1964, which marked a pivotal moment in the country's struggle for sovereignty over the Panama Canal.

History

The day commemorates the outbreak of riots that began on January 9, 1964, when Panamanian students marched to the Canal Zone, a territory then controlled by the United States, to raise the Panamanian flag alongside the U.S. flag at Balboa High School. The peaceful protest escalated into violent clashes between U.S. military forces and Panamanian civilians, resulting in several deaths and many injuries. Most of those killed were young Panamanians, hence the term "martyrs."

These events intensified nationalist sentiments and contributed to subsequent negotiations that eventually led to the signing of the Torrijos-Carter Treaties in 1977, which provided for the gradual transfer of control over the Canal from the United States to Panama by December 31, 1999.

  • Memorial Services: Government officials, along with citizens, attend memorial services to honor those who lost their lives during the riots.

  • Flag Raising: The national flag is hoisted at half-mast as a sign of respect for those who died.
