The Day: Isra and Mi'raj, observed on the 27th day of the Islamic month of Rajab, is an important religious occasion in Oman, as in other Muslim-majority countries. This event commemorates the night journey (Isra) of the Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Jerusalem and his ascension (Mi'raj) to the heavens.
History: According to Islamic tradition, during this miraculous journey which took place around the year 621 CE, the Prophet was transported on a mystical steed called Buraq. In Jerusalem, he led other prophets in prayer at what is now known as Al-Aqsa Mosque. Afterwards, he ascended through the seven heavens to speak with Allah (God), who gave him instructions for Muslims to pray five times a day.
