Otago Anniversary Day is a public holiday observed in the Otago region of New Zealand, commemorating the establishment of the province. It is celebrated on the closest Monday to March 23rd, the date in 1848 when the first European settlers arrived on the John Wickliffe to what is now Port Chalmers, near Dunedin.
The holiday marks Otago's foundation and recognizes the contributions of early Scottish settlers who established a Free Church settlement under the guidance of the Lay Association of the Free Church of Scotland. The New Zealand Company organized their voyage.
Traditions include local events such as festivals, parades, and Highland games that reflect the Scottish heritage of many of Otago's early settlers. Residents often take advantage of the long weekend to engage in outdoor activities and family gatherings.
