History and Significance: Angam Day is a national holiday in Nauru that commemorates the survival of the Nauruan people through two critical periods when the indigenous population fell to critical levels. The term "Angam" translates to "homecoming" or "jubilation." The first Angam in 1919 was when the population recovered to 1,500 after a devastating influenza epidemic and other calamities including forced labor off-island during the phosphate mining boom. The second Angam, recognized in 1949, celebrates again reaching a population of 1,500 after the turmoil and displacement caused by World War II.
