Phulpati is an integral part of the Dashain festival, which is the longest and most significant festival in Nepal. Celebrated by Hindus, Dashain symbolizes the victory of good over evil.
Phulpati, which occurs on the seventh day of the Dashain festival, holds historical significance dating back to the time when Nepal consisted of small kingdoms. During this time, it was customary for these kingdoms to send their respects to the royal family in Kathmandu in the form of Phulpati (literally meaning "flowers and leaves"). Phulpati comprises a collection of sacred plants like banana stalks, pomegranate branches, and sugar cane tied with red cloth.
A procession used to carry these items from Gorkha, a region about 100 miles away from Kathmandu – a tradition that has been continued by the army in recent times. The arrival of Phulpati at Hanuman Dhoka Palace was accompanied by religious rituals.
