National Democracy Day, known as "Loktantra Diwas" in Nepali, is observed on the 24th of April every year in Nepal to commemorate the restoration of democracy after the end of the autocratic Rana regime and more recently, to mark the success of the People's Movement II (Jana Andolan II).
The day has historical significance dating back to February 19, 1951 (Falgun 7, 2007 BS in the Nepali calendar), when the Rana oligarchy that had ruled Nepal for more than a century was overthrown through a revolution led by King Tribhuvan along with various political leaders and activists. This event marked the beginning of a new era of democracy and constitutional monarchy.
In a modern context, National Democracy Day also celebrates April 24, 2006 (Baishakh 11, 2063 BS), when King Gyanendra reinstated the House of Representatives following an intense People's Movement II that demanded the end of monarchial rule and establishment of democracy.
