National Democracy Day in Nepal

National Democracy Day, known as "Loktantra Diwas" in Nepali, is observed on the 24th of April every year in Nepal to commemorate the restoration of democracy after the end of the autocratic Rana regime and more recently, to mark the success of the People's Movement II (Jana Andolan II).

History

The day has historical significance dating back to February 19, 1951 (Falgun 7, 2007 BS in the Nepali calendar), when the Rana oligarchy that had ruled Nepal for more than a century was overthrown through a revolution led by King Tribhuvan along with various political leaders and activists. This event marked the beginning of a new era of democracy and constitutional monarchy.

In a modern context, National Democracy Day also celebrates April 24, 2006 (Baishakh 11, 2063 BS), when King Gyanendra reinstated the House of Representatives following an intense People's Movement II that demanded the end of monarchial rule and establishment of democracy.

Traditions

On this day:

  • The President and other government officials pay homage to martyrs at Shaheed Smarak (Martyr's Memorial) parks across Nepal.
  • Various programs are organized by political parties and civil society groups highlighting democratic values and remembering those who sacrificed their lives for democracy.
  • Educational institutions may hold discussions or debates on topics related to democracy.
  • State-run media broadcast special programs reflecting on Nepal's democratic journey.

Activities

People participate in:

  • Public gatherings and rallies organized by political parties to celebrate democratic achievements.
  • Cultural events showcasing traditional music, dance, and performances that represent national unity and pride.
  • Reflection on past struggles for democracy and discussions about current political issues.

National Democracy Day serves as a reminder for Nepalese citizens about their rights as well as their responsibilities within a democratic framework.
