Guru Nanak Jayanti in Nepal

Guru Nanak Jayanti, also known as Gurpurab, is the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism and the first of the ten Sikh Gurus. In Nepal, where Sikhism is practiced by a minority, this day is observed with respect and reverence.

History

Guru Nanak was born in 1469 in Nankana Sahib, which is now in Pakistan. His birthday is celebrated on the full moon day (Purnima) of the Kartik month as per the Hindu lunar calendar. This typically falls in November.

Traditions

On Guru Nanak Jayanti, Sikhs in Nepal start the day with morning hymns known as 'Asa-di-Var'. They then partake in processions (Nagar Kirtan), led by five Khalsas (the pure ones) and followed by groups singing hymns. The Guru Granth Sahib, the holy book of Sikhs, is carried on a palanquin during these processions.

Sikhs visit Gurdwaras (Sikh temples), where special programs are organized. The recitation of their holy book from beginning to end (Akhand Path) takes place and may last for several days. Religious poetry (Kirtan) and discourses are also part of these gatherings.

Community kitchens called 'Langars' are set up to offer free food to all visitors regardless of religion or background, emphasizing equality and community service which are key values in Sikhism.

What People Do

  • Attend services at Gurdwaras
  • Participate in processions
  • Volunteer at Langars
  • Recite prayers and hymns
  • Reflect on Guru Nanak's teachings about love, equality, and justice

In summary, Guru Nanak Jayanti in Nepal is marked by religious devotion and community services that reflect the inclusive principles taught by Guru Nanak Dev Ji.
