Ghatasthapana in Nepal

Ghatasthapana marks the beginning of the Dashain festival, the longest and most significant Hindu festival in Nepal. This day falls on the first day of the bright half of the lunar month Ashwin (usually late September or early October).

History and Traditions:

Ghatasthapana has deep-rooted historical significance which is tied to the power of Devi Durga as per Hindu mythology. The tradition symbolizes sowing seeds for germination, which metaphorically stands for the beginning of life and prosperity.

On this day, a special ritual is conducted to invoke goddess Durga. A "Kalash" (holy water vessel) symbolizing the goddess is filled with holy water and covered with cow dung. Seeds are sown to grow "Jamara" (barley shoots), which are considered sacred and used later during the festival.

Rituals Performed:

  • Kalash Establishment: The Kalash is placed in a sanctified area of one's home known as "Dashain Ghar."
  • Sowing Jamara: Barley seeds are planted in a sand-filled container, which will sprout into Jamara over the next nine days.
  • Worship: A priest or household head performs a puja (worship), invoking divine energies within the Kalash.
  • Sandhya Arghya: Offerings are made during twilight hours.

Activities on Ghatasthapana:

  • Families gather to perform Ghatasthapana rituals.
  • Homes are cleaned and sanctified to welcome blessings from Goddess Durga.
  • Devotees visit temples dedicated to Shakti/Devi Durga.
  • Fasting often takes place among worshippers seeking blessings for good health and prosperity.

The significance of Ghatasthapana lies in its symbolism for growth, prosperity, and divine blessings that set a devout tone for Nepalese as they commence Dashain festivities.
