Dashami (Dashain) in Nepal

Dashami, also known as Vijaya Dashami, is the tenth day of the Nepalese festival Dashain, which is the longest and most auspicious festival in the Nepalese annual calendar. Celebrated by Nepalese people worldwide, it is particularly significant in Hinduism as it marks the victory of good over evil.

History and Traditions

The history of Dashain dates back to ancient times and is rooted in Hindu mythology. It celebrates the victory of the goddess Durga over the demon Mahishasura. The festival symbolizes the triumph of divine forces over malevolent beings.

Traditionally, Dashain spans 15 days, with Dashami being one of the most important days. On this day, elders apply a mixture of rice, yogurt, and vermilion to younger family members' foreheads—a ritual known as Tika. This red mark, called a Jamara, is considered a blessing from the goddess Durga herself.

What People Do

On Dashami:

  • Families gather for reunions and to receive blessings from elders.
  • Tika ceremonies occur where elders give blessings for health and longevity.
  • Gifts are exchanged among family members.
  • Delicious feasts are prepared with special dishes like meat delicacies, sweets, and sel roti (traditional rice flour rings).
  • Some people also engage in animal sacrifices as an offering to Durga although this practice has become controversial and is declining.
  • Kites are flown as a symbol of freedom and enjoyment.

This day solidifies social bonds and emphasizes respect for one's elders and gratitude toward divine powers for their blessings upon humanity.
