Christmas Day in Nepal

Christmas Day, known as "Bada Din" in Nepal, is a relatively new phenomenon in the predominantly Hindu and Buddhist country. However, with the growing Christian community and global cultural influences, Christmas has started to gain popularity among various communities, not just Christians.

History and Traditions

In Nepal, the history of Christmas is closely tied to the work of Christian missionaries who introduced the festival over the years. Although it is not a traditional Nepali celebration and does not have deep historical roots in Nepalese culture, it has begun to be celebrated with enthusiasm in urban areas.

Christian Nepalis observe Christmas by going to church for special services. They decorate their homes with stars and lights and share a festive meal with family and friends. In recent years, businesses and hotels have also started decorating their premises, hosting parties, and offering special deals during the Christmas season to attract tourists and revelers.

Contemporary Celebrations

On Christmas Day in Nepal:

  • Church Services: The Christian minority attends church services that often include singing of hymns and carols.

  • Decorations: Homes of Christians are usually decorated, similar to Western traditions with Christmas trees, lights, stars, cribs depicting nativity scenes.

  • Public Festivities: In major cities like Kathmandu or Pokhara, streets might be adorned with festive decorations. Restaurants may offer special Christmas menus.

  • Gift-Giving: Exchanging gifts among family members and friends is becoming more common.

  • Community Events: Some organizations host events such as charity dinners or distribute gifts to underprivileged children.

While Christmas Day is not a public holiday in Nepal for everyone (except for the Christian community), it does provide an opportunity for people from different backgrounds to partake in celebratory events that embody a spirit of joy and giving.
