Buddha Jayanti in Nepal

Buddha Jayanti, also known as Buddha Purnima, is a significant festival in Nepal celebrating the birth of Prince Siddhartha Gautama, later known as Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism. It falls on the full moon day of the Nepali month of Baishakh (April-May) and commemorates not just his birth but also his enlightenment and passing away, making it a thrice-sacred day for Buddhists around the world.

History

The historical Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama, was born in Lumbini, which is situated in modern-day Nepal. As such, Buddha Jayanti holds particular importance in Nepal where it is a national holiday. The exact year of Buddha's birth is subject to debate, but it is traditionally placed at around 623 B.C.

Traditions

On this auspicious day, devout Buddhists and followers visit stupas and monasteries. The two most important pilgrimage sites during this festival are:

  • Lumbini: The birthplace of Buddha.
  • Swayambhunath and Boudhanath Stupas: Ancient religious complexes in Kathmandu.

People often circle around the stupas and chant mantras. Monuments are decorated with colorful flags and lights.

Activities

  • Prayers and Recitations: Devotees engage in prayer ceremonies and recite Buddhist scriptures.
  • Offerings: Flowers, candles, and incense are offered at shrines.
  • Acts of Kindness: Many people spend the day performing good deeds such as giving to charity or helping those in need as a way to honor Buddha's teachings on compassion.
  • Vegetarianism: Observers often consume vegetarian food on this day out of respect for life.
  • Processions: In some areas, processions featuring images or statues of Buddha may be carried out.

Buddha Jayanti is both a cultural and religious event in Nepal that reflects deep reverence for peace, non-violence, and enlightenment – core tenets of Buddhism.
