Fastelavn, the Norwegian equivalent of Carnival, is traditionally celebrated on the Sunday before Ash Wednesday, marking the start of Lent. It's a festivity with roots in both pagan traditions and Christian customs.
The word "Fastelavn" comes from the German "Fastelabend", meaning "the evening before the fast". The celebration has evolved over centuries, incorporating elements from pre-Christian springtime festivities. It was initially a feast to prepare for the 40 days of fasting during Lent, but with time and the Lutheran Reformation in Norway, the religious significance has diminished.
While not as elaborate as Carnivals in some countries, Fastelavn remains an occasion for merriment in Norway. Children often participate in parades at schools or kindergartens while families enjoy get-togethers with traditional food and fun activities. The emphasis today is more on family enjoyment rather than any religious observance.
