For Carnival, Norwegians traditionally serve wheat buns filled with whipped cream.

Carnival in Norway

Fastelavn, the Norwegian equivalent of Carnival, is traditionally celebrated on the Sunday before Ash Wednesday, marking the start of Lent. It's a festivity with roots in both pagan traditions and Christian customs.

Historical Background

The word "Fastelavn" comes from the German "Fastelabend", meaning "the evening before the fast". The celebration has evolved over centuries, incorporating elements from pre-Christian springtime festivities. It was initially a feast to prepare for the 40 days of fasting during Lent, but with time and the Lutheran Reformation in Norway, the religious significance has diminished.

Traditions

  • Fastelavnsris: Children create decorative branches by attaching colorful feathers to twigs. These adorned branches are symbols of life and fertility.
  • Costumes: Similar to other Carnival traditions around the world, dressing up in costumes is a key part of Fastelavn.
  • Buns: A special pastry known as "fastelavnsbolle", a cardamom-spiced bun filled with whipped cream and sometimes topped with icing or powdered sugar, is traditionally eaten.
  • Games: "Slå katten af tønden" (hit the cat out of the barrel) is a game where children hit a barrel filled with sweets, akin to a piñata. Historically it had an actual cat inside to ward off evil spirits.

Modern Celebrations

While not as elaborate as Carnivals in some countries, Fastelavn remains an occasion for merriment in Norway. Children often participate in parades at schools or kindergartens while families enjoy get-togethers with traditional food and fun activities. The emphasis today is more on family enjoyment rather than any religious observance.
