Christmas Day in the Netherlands
Date: December 25th
History and Traditions:
The Netherlands, like many other countries, celebrates Christmas Day as a significant religious and cultural holiday, marking the birth of Jesus Christ.
Historically, the Dutch have placed more emphasis on Sinterklaas (St. Nicholas) on December 5th but Christmas has increased in prominence over time.
Two days of celebration: Eerste Kerstdag (First Day of Christmas) on December 25th and Tweede Kerstdag (Second Day of Christmas) on December 26th.
Christmas Eve:
Some attend a midnight church service known as "Nachtmis".
Families may start festivities with a special meal or gathering.
First Day of Christmas (December 25th):
Often a quiet day spent with close family.
Traditional meals include gourmetten or raclette-style indoor grilling at home.
Homes are decorated with nativity scenes, candles, and Kerstkransjes (Christmas wreath cookies) hung in trees.
Activities and Celebrations:
Gift-giving is not central since it often occurs earlier in the month during Sinterklaas.
Churches hold special Christmas services.
Many watch the King's Christmas speech broadcasted on television.
Second Day of Christmas (December 26th):
An extension of relaxation and family time from the first day.
Some use this day to visit extended family or friends who they didn't see on the first day.
