The Yang di-Pertuan Agong's Birthday is a national holiday in Malaysia, celebrating the birthday of the country's reigning monarch. Yang di-Pertuan Agong, also known as the King, is a position rotated among nine hereditary Malay rulers every five years.
Establishment: The tradition started after the formation of Malaysia in 1963. The first Yang di-Pertuan Agong was elected on 31st August 1957.
Date Change: Initially, the King's birthday was celebrated on June 3 every year. However, since the office rotates, the celebration date has been changed to correspond with the birthday of the reigning King.
Ceremonies: National ceremonies are conducted with pomp and pageantry. A Trooping of the Colour ceremony by members of the Armed Forces takes place at Merdeka Square or at Istana Negara, Kuala Lumpur.
Honours List: It is customary for the King to bestow honours, awards, and medals to deserving citizens who have served the nation.
Public Holiday: It's a day off for citizens. Government offices and most businesses are closed.
On this day, Malaysians enjoy a public holiday that allows them to relax and participate in various leisure activities. Some might attend or watch live broadcasts of official celebrations or spend time with family and friends. Patriotic events may be organized within communities to mark this significant occasion.
