Diwali/Deepavali in Malaysia

The Day

Diwali, also known as Deepavali, is a significant Hindu festival widely celebrated in Malaysia, falling typically in October or November. It is a public holiday in the country and is colloquially referred to as the "Festival of Lights."

History and Traditions

The festival marks the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. In Malaysia, it reflects the multicultural fabric of the country with its Hindu community tracing their roots back to South Indian Tamil migrants.

Traditionally, Hindus start the day with a ritual oil bath before dawn, symbolizing purification. Homes are thoroughly cleaned and decorated with "kolam," intricate designs made on the floor using colored rice or powder. Lamps called "diyas" are lit to invite Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, into homes.

Celebrations

On Deepavali day, Malaysians of Hindu faith dress up in new clothes. Prayers are offered at temples which are adorned with lights and colorful decorations. Families come together to share festive meals that consist of an array of traditional Indian dishes and sweets such as murukku and ladoo.

Fireworks displays and open houses are common where people from various races and religions in Malaysia visit their Hindu friends' homes to celebrate together. Gifts and sweets are exchanged among friends and family members.

Cultural programs featuring music, dance performances, and dramas depicting stories from Hindu mythology are often organized by communities. Shopping malls and public spaces also join in with festive decorations, offering special sales for shoppers during this period.

Diwali in Malaysia showcases the country's diversity while maintaining traditional practices that have been passed down through generations within the Hindu community.
