Day of Arafat in Malaysia

Day of Arafat, also known as Hari Arafah, is an important Islamic observance in Malaysia. It falls on the 9th day of the Islamic month of Dhu al-Hijjah and is the day before Eid al-Adha, the Festival of Sacrifice. This day commemorates when Prophet Muhammad delivered his Farewell Sermon to Muslims who had accompanied him for the Hajj towards Mount Arafat.

History and Significance

The history of the Day of Arafat is rooted in Islamic tradition, where it is believed that on this day, Allah perfected Islam for humanity and completed His favor upon them. The significance of this day lies in its association with the Hajj pilgrimage, one of the five pillars of Islam.

Traditions

In Malaysia, while only Muslims who are on their pilgrimage to Mecca can stand on Mount Arafat itself, those who are not participating in Hajj observe this day with fasting and prayers. It is believed that fasting on this day expiates the sins from the preceding year and the coming year.

Practices

  • Fasting: Many Malaysian Muslims fast from dawn until sunset as an act of worship and seeking forgiveness.
  • Prayers: Special prayers, supplications (dua), and recitations from the Quran are performed throughout the day.
  • Sermons: Religious talks or sermons are often held in mosques to remind people about the importance of this sacred day.

Muslims across Malaysia utilize this spiritually significant occasion for reflection, devotion, and renewal of faith. Even though it is not a public holiday in Malaysia, it remains a special observance for those within the Muslim community.
