Flag Day in Mexico (Día de la Bandera)

Date: February 24th

History:

Flag Day in Mexico celebrates the country's tricolor flag: green, white, and red with the national coat of arms at the center. The current flag was adopted in 1821 but underwent several modifications until its last design was finalized in 1968. The day commemorates the Plan of Iguala and the conclusion of the Mexican War of Independence when Agustin de Iturbide, a military leader and politician, chose the colors that would represent Mexico.

Traditions:

On Flag Day, patriotic events are held throughout Mexico. Government officials participate in ceremonies to honor the flag. Schools have civic ceremonies where students pledge allegiance to the flag and sing the national anthem. Military parades and educational events about Mexican history are also common.

Activities:

  • Flag-raising Ceremonies: Officials perform solemn flag-raising ceremonies at public buildings.
  • Civic Events: Schools and public institutions organize events promoting patriotism and respect for national symbols.
  • Cultural Presentations: Educational programs about Mexican history are presented, often including stories about heroes from the independence era.
  • National Pride: Citizens display flags at their homes and public places to show national pride.

This day is an opportunity for Mexicans to express pride in their nation's sovereignty, culture, and history through homage to their national flag.
