Day of the Holy Kings in Mexico

Date: January 6th

History & Significance: The Day of the Holy Kings, known as "Día de los Reyes Magos" in Spanish, is a Christian feast day that celebrates the Biblical adoration of baby Jesus by the three Wise Men, also known as Magi or Kings. Originating in Catholic tradition, this event is considered an epiphany when Jesus Christ was revealed to the Gentiles through these Magi who came from the East following a star to Bethlehem. This day marks the culmination of the Twelve Days of Christmas and is especially significant in Latin American countries, including Mexico.

Traditions:

  • Rosca de Reyes: A central tradition involves sharing a 'Rosca de Reyes' (Kings' Ring), which is a sweet round bread adorned with candied fruit to symbolize a crown. Hidden inside the bread are one or more figures of baby Jesus. The person who finds a figurine is expected to host a party on February 2nd, known as "Día de la Candelaria" (Candlemas Day).

  • Gift-giving: In Mexican culture, children often receive gifts on this day rather than Christmas Day, emulating the gifts presented by the Magi to Jesus. Children may leave their shoes out on January 5th with letters for the Kings, hoping to find presents beside them in the morning.

  • Nativity scenes: Nativity scenes remain displayed until this day with figures of the Three Kings added on January 6th.

  • Community events: Parades and performances reenacting the arrival of the Wise Men are common in various cities across Mexico.

What People Do: Families and friends gather to cut and share Rosca de Reyes while children enjoy their new toys and gifts. Religious services may also be held, and some communities engage in charitable giving to honor the spirit of giving associated with the Magi's visit.
