Feast of Saints Peter and Paul in Malta

The Day:

The Feast of Saints Peter and Paul, also known as the feast of ‘L-Imnarja,’ is celebrated annually on the 29th of June in Malta. It is a public holiday that commemorates the martyrdom of apostles Saint Peter and Saint Paul.

History:

The name ‘L-Imnarja’ is derived from the Italian 'luminare,' meaning to illuminate, reflecting an ancient tradition where bonfires would light up the night. The feast itself has roots going back to the times of the Knights of St. John, making it one of Malta's oldest feasts with historical significance tied closely to both religious and agrarian customs.

Traditions:

A key element of this feast is the traditional horse races held on a long road leading to Mdina, Malta's old capital. The night before, it is customary for families to gather at Buskett Gardens near Rabat for a picnic that extends into the early hours of the morning. This festive gathering includes singing, music, and feasting on Maltese specialties like rabbit stew.

What People Do:

On this day:

  • Religious Celebrations: Maltese people attend church services where they honor Saints Peter and Paul. Local parishes may organize processions featuring statues of the saints carried through streets adorned with decorations and banners.

  • Festivities: Apart from Buskett Gardens gatherings, various localities celebrate with band marches, fireworks displays, and community events.

  • Agricultural Significance: Historically tied to farming communities, some people attend an agricultural show at Buskett which showcases local produce and livestock.

The Feast of Saints Peter and Paul remains one of Malta’s beloved traditional celebrations, reflecting both its religious heritage and its age-old agricultural roots.
