Repression Victims' Day in Mongolia

Repression Victims' Day in Mongolia is observed annually on May 31. This day is a solemn commemoration dedicated to the thousands of Mongolians who were persecuted, imprisoned, and executed during the political purges primarily carried out in the 1930s under the communist regime led by Khorloogiin Choibalsan, who was then the leader of Mongolia and closely aligned with Joseph Stalin's policies in the Soviet Union.

History

The period of repression in Mongolia saw intellectuals, political leaders, Buddhist monks, and others accused of counter-revolutionary activities or espionage summarily tried and executed. The exact number of victims remains uncertain but is estimated to be between 20,000 to 30,000. It was not until the democratic revolution in 1990 that the Mongolian government officially acknowledged these atrocities.

Traditions

On Repression Victims' Day:

  • Memorial Services: Families and citizens participate in memorial services to honor those who lost their lives. These are often held at cemeteries and memorial sites.

  • Laying Wreaths: People lay wreaths and flowers at monuments dedicated to the victims of repression, such as the Memorial Museum of Victims of Political Persecution located in Ulaanbaatar.

  • Educational Events: Seminars and exhibitions may be held to educate the public about this dark chapter in Mongolian history.

  • Moments of Silence: A moment of silence may be observed across the country to pay respect to those who were affected by political repression.

What People Do

Individuals take this day to remember their ancestors and family members who suffered during these purges. They visit graveyards where victims are buried, light candles, offer prayers, and share stories about their loved ones. It is a day for reflection on human rights and the importance of democracy and freedom.
