Full Moon Day of Thadingyut Holiday (End of Buddhist Lent) in Myanmar

The Full Moon Day of Thadingyut, also known as the Lighting Festival of Myanmar, marks the end of the Buddhist Lent (Vassa) and is one of the country's most significant religious holidays. Celebrated on the seventh month of the Burmese lunar calendar, it typically falls in October.

History and Significance

  • The tradition originates from the legend that Buddha returned to earth after spending three months of Lent in heaven, where he had been giving sermons to celestial beings including his mother who had been reborn there.
  • His descent from heaven is symbolized by lighting candles and lanterns as a gesture of welcome and paying homage.

Traditions

  • Lighting Candles and Lanterns: People light candles and colorful lanterns at their homes, in streets, and particularly around pagodas and monasteries to symbolize enlightenment.
  • Paying Respect: It is customary for younger people to pay respect to elders by offering them gifts and asking for forgiveness for past wrongdoings.
  • Almsgiving: Devotees also give donations and offer food to monks in a gesture that signifies sharing happiness with others.
  • Releasing Fish: In some regions, there is a tradition known as "Thadingyut Myittar Biu," where people release fish into rivers or lakes as an act of merit-making.

Activities

  • During this time, temporary stages called "Zats" are built for performances such as traditional dances, plays, and music shows.
  • Some people take part in robe-weaving competitions where teams compete overnight to weave monk robes called "Thingan."
  • Festivities often include visiting well-lit pagodas to pray, pay respects, and participate in meditation sessions.
  • Streets are usually bustling with people enjoying the festive atmosphere, visiting friends and family.

The Full Moon Day of Thadingyut is not only a religious observance but also a celebration that brings together communities through shared cultural practices across Myanmar.
