Ramadan is a period of prayer, reflection and fasting for many Muslims worldwide. It is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar.

Ramadan Start in Mali

Day: Ramadan in Mali, as in other Islamic countries, does not begin on a fixed date each year. Instead, it follows the lunar Islamic calendar and begins with the sighting of the new moon. Since Mali is predominantly Muslim, the start of Ramadan is a significant event across the country.

History: Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and is considered the holiest month for Muslims. It commemorates the first revelation of the Quran to Prophet Muhammad according to Islamic belief. The tradition has been observed for over 14 centuries since its inception.

Traditions: During Ramadan, Malian Muslims engage in fasting from dawn until sunset, refraining from consuming food, drinking liquids, smoking, and engaging in sinful behavior. The pre-dawn meal before the fast begins is known as "suhoor," and the meal that breaks the fast after sunset is called "iftar."

Families often come together to break their fast with dates and water followed by communal prayers (Tarawih) in mosques. There's an emphasis on charity (Zakat) during Ramadan; many Malians give to those less fortunate to purify their wealth and as an act of worship.

What People Do:

  • Fasting: Abstaining from food and drink during daylight hours.
  • Prayer: Engaging in extra prayers beyond the five daily prayers.
  • Quran Recitation: Reading or listening to recitations from the Quran.
  • Charitable Acts: Giving alms or providing food for those who are less fortunate.
  • Community Gatherings: Joining friends and family for iftar meals after sunset.

The practice of fasting serves as a time for spiritual reflection, increased devotion and worship. Throughout Mali, people take this time to strengthen their faith, improve moral character, and show empathy for those who are less fortunate.
