Orthodox Good Friday, or Veliki Petak as it is known in Montenegro, is a significant day in the Christian Orthodox calendar. It commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death at Calvary. The date of Orthodox Good Friday varies each year as it is based on the Julian calendar, which differs from the Gregorian calendar used in most western countries.
Orthodox Christianity has a strong historical presence in Montenegro, and the country has established traditions that reflect the solemnity of Good Friday. The day is observed with strict fasting, where people abstain from food or consume very simple meals without meat or dairy products. This practice symbolizes the sacrifices made by Jesus.
Church services play a central role in the observance of Good Friday. These services often include readings from the Gospels that narrate the events leading up to Jesus' crucifixion. In many churches, there is also a ritual procession involving the veneration of the epitaphios (a cloth icon representing Christ's body) which is carried through the church.
