Victory Day and Memorial Day (Ziua Victoriei și a Comemorării Eroilor Căzuți pentru Independența Patriei)

Date: May 9

History and Traditions: Victory Day commemorates the victory over Nazi Germany in World War II and pays homage to the sacrifices of Soviet soldiers, including those from the Moldavian SSR. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, Moldova, like many other post-Soviet states, continued to observe this day due to its historical significance.

Memorial Day was later incorporated with Victory Day to honor all Moldovan heroes who fell for the independence of their homeland, thereby extending the commemoration beyond World War II to include those who died in other conflicts, including the War of Transnistria.

Traditionally, people visit war memorials and monuments dedicated to fallen soldiers. In Chișinău, the capital city, a significant event is often held at the Eternity Memorial Complex. Here, veterans and public officials lay flowers and wreaths. Military parades and concerts may also take place.

What People Do:

  • Attend commemorative events
  • Participate in laying flowers at monuments
  • Join in military parades (if held)
  • Observe moments of silence for fallen soldiers
  • Engage in family gatherings
  • Veterans share stories with younger generations

Victory Day remains a significant holiday for honoring history and military service while Memorial Day serves as a broader remembrance for all who have sacrificed their lives for Moldova's sovereignty.
