Saint Devote's Day in Monaco

Date: January 27th

History and Significance: Saint Devote's Day is a national holiday in Monaco that celebrates the patron saint of the Principality, Saint Devote. According to legend, Devota (Dévote in French), a young Christian martyr, was killed during the Diocletian persecution in the 4th century. Her body, set adrift by fellow Christians to prevent it from falling into persecutors' hands, washed up on Monaco's shores. The legend states that a dove flew out of her mouth as her relics were carried through Monaco, leading them to the church where they were to be buried.

Traditions: The traditions of Saint Devote's Day include a ceremonial procession carrying a relic of Saint Devote through the streets of Monaco on January 26th. A boat symbolizing the one that brought her body to shore is typically set ablaze in front of the princely family and Monegasques as an offering and gesture of remembrance. This act also reaffirms their faith and pays tribute to their patron saint.

On January 27th, a Mass takes place at Monaco Cathedral, attended by Prince Albert II and members of the princely family as well as residents. The service includes singing and prayers dedicated to Saint Devote.

Activities:

  • Procession with relics
  • Boat burning ceremony
