Day: Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar and its start is determined by the sighting of the new moon, which varies from one country to another. In Libya, as in many Muslim-majority countries, religious authorities announce the beginning of Ramadan after confirming the moon sighting.
History and Traditions: Historically, Ramadan commemorates the month in which Muslims believe the Quran was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad. During this time, Libyan Muslims join fellow believers worldwide in observing fast from dawn until sunset. The pre-dawn meal is known as Suhoor and the evening meal that breaks the fast is called Iftar.
What People Do:
The practices during Ramadan aim to teach self-discipline, self-restraint, and generosity. In Libya, just like elsewhere in the Muslim world, these traditions are deeply embedded in cultural life during this holy month.
