Background: The Day of Arafah is an Islamic holy day observed on the 9th day of Dhu al-Hijjah, the twelfth month of the Islamic lunar calendar. It falls a day before Eid al-Adha, one of the two major Islamic festivals, and is the second day of the Hajj pilgrimage. In Libya, as in other Muslim-majority countries, this day holds significant religious importance.
History: The significance of Arafah stems from Islamic tradition which recounts that Prophet Muhammad delivered his Farewell Sermon to Muslims who had accompanied him for the Hajj towards the end of his life. It is also believed to be the day when God perfected Islam.
