Holy Saturday in Lithuania

Holy Saturday, known as "Šventadienis" or "Didysis Šeštadienis" in Lithuanian, is a day of solemn reflection and anticipation that takes place between Good Friday and Easter Sunday. It is part of the Holy Week commemorating the events leading up to Jesus Christ's resurrection.

History and Traditions:

  • Religious Observances: As a predominantly Roman Catholic country, Lithuanians observe Holy Saturday with great reverence. It marks the end of Lent, a period of fasting and penitence. Churches remain somber and decorated with subdued colors to signify mourning.

  • Easter Vigil: The most significant religious service takes place on Holy Saturday night - the Easter Vigil. This service includes the blessing of fire, lighting of the Paschal candle symbolizing the light of Christ, and readings from Scripture that recount salvation history.

  • Blessing of Food Baskets: One unique tradition is the blessing of food baskets ("Velykų šventinimas"). These baskets are filled with symbolic foods such as eggs, bread, meat, salt, and cheese – each with its own meaning. The blessed food is then eaten on Easter Sunday as part of the celebration meal.

  • Grave Visitation: It is also customary for people to visit the graves of deceased relatives on Holy Saturday. They tidy up grave sites and leave flowers or candles as a sign of respect and remembrance.

  • Preparation for Easter: While there are no elaborate celebrations on Holy Saturday itself, it is a day when families prepare for Easter Sunday. This includes cooking traditional dishes and painting eggs ("margučiai") with intricate designs using wax-resist dyeing techniques.

On Holy Saturday in Lithuania, while public life may seem quiet during the day as people reflect on the solemnity of Christ's death, behind closed doors it bustles with preparations for one of Christianity's most joyous feasts – Easter Sunday.
