Binara Full Moon Poya Day is an important religious observance for Buddhists in Sri Lanka, celebrating the full moon of the month of Binara (September). This day holds historical significance as it commemorates two key events in Buddhist history:
The Establishment of the Bhikkhuni Order: On this day, the Buddha consented to the establishment of an order for female monastics, known as Bhikkhunis. This was a significant step for women at that time, providing them with an opportunity to renounce worldly life and pursue enlightenment.
The Visit of the Buddha to Heaven: It is also believed that during this period, the Buddha visited the heavenly abode called Tavatimsa to preach the Abhidhamma to his mother who had been reborn there.
Religious Activities: Devotees engage in various religious activities such as observing Sil (taking precepts), meditation, and listening to Dhamma sermons at temples.
Offerings and Charity: People visit temples to make offerings such as flowers, incense, and lights. Acts of charity include sharing food with monks and providing alms to those in need.
Reflection and Merit-Making: The day is spent in reflection on one's actions and making merit through good deeds which are believed to have a positive impact on one's karma.
Temple Visits: Many devotees spend the day at their local temple participating in communal prayers and rituals.
Observing Precepts: Laypeople often observe eight precepts during Poya days which involve abstaining from luxuries and engaging more deeply in spiritual practices.
Cultural Activities: While primarily a religious holiday, cultural activities related to Buddhism may also take place including discussions on Dhamma or Buddhist-themed exhibitions.
Binara Full Moon Poya Day is a public holiday in Sri Lanka where devout Buddhists reaffirm their faith and commitment towards leading a life based on Buddhist principles.
