Date: That Luang Festival, also known as Boun That Luang, is held annually over three to seven days during the full moon of the twelfth lunar month, usually falling in November.
History: The festival is rooted in Buddhist and Lao traditions and has been celebrated for hundreds of years. It centers on Pha That Luang (Great Stupa), a gold-covered large Buddhist stupa in the center of Vientiane, which is believed to house a relic of the Buddha. The stupa's origins date back to the 3rd century, but the current structure was largely built in the 16th century after King Setthathirath moved the capital of Laos to Vientiane.
