Day of the Capital in Kazakhstan

Day of the Capital is a national holiday in Kazakhstan celebrated annually on July 6. This day marks the anniversary of the official transfer of the capital from Almaty to Astana (renamed Nur-Sultan in 2019) in 1997. The move was initiated by Nursultan Nazarbayev, the first President of Kazakhstan, as part of a strategic development plan to promote economic and political growth in the central region of the country.

  • 1994: Nazarbayev proposed moving the capital.
  • July 6, 1994: The Supreme Council decided to move the capital.
  • December 10, 1997: Official transfer took place.
  • 1998: First celebration of Day of the Capital.
