Eid al-Adha in Kuwait

Eid al-Adha, also known as the "Festival of Sacrifice," is one of the two major Islamic holidays celebrated worldwide, with the other being Eid al-Fitr. It falls on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah in the Islamic lunar calendar, marking the culmination of the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca.

Historical Background

The holiday honors the willingness of Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God's command. However, before he could carry out the sacrifice, God provided a ram to sacrifice instead. In commemoration of this intervention, animals are sacrificed ritually.

Traditions and Practices in Kuwait

  • Prayer: The day begins with Muslims performing the Eid prayer at mosques or open areas.
  • Sacrifice: Following prayers, those who can afford it perform Qurbani by sacrificing a sheep, goat, cow or camel. The practice emulates Prophet Ibrahim's sacrifice and is a key tradition during Eid.
  • Sharing Meat: The meat from sacrificed animals is divided into three parts: one share for the family, one for relatives and friends, and one for the poor and needy.
  • Feasting: Families gather for large meals. Traditional dishes are prepared using meat from Qurbani.
  • Charity: Giving to less fortunate members of society is emphasized during Eid. It's a time for charity known as "Zakat al-Fitr."
  • Socializing: People visit relatives and friends, exchange gifts and greetings. Children often receive new clothes and Eidiyah (money gifts).
  • Public Holiday: Eid al-Adha is a public holiday in Kuwait. Government offices, schools, and most businesses are closed.

Eid al-Adha in Kuwait encapsulates both devotion and community spirit as people come together to celebrate faith, generosity, and compassion through age-old traditions that have been passed down through generations.
