New Year’s Day is the first day of the year, or January 1, in the Gregorian calendar.

New Year's Day in South Korea

New Year's Day, known as "Sinjeong" (신정) in Korean, is a significant holiday celebrated on January 1st following the Gregorian calendar. While it is an important day, it is distinct from the Lunar New Year, or "Seollal," which holds greater traditional significance and is celebrated widely with various customs.

History and Traditions:

  • New Year's Bell Ringing Ceremony: A notable tradition on New Year's Day is the bell-ringing ceremony at Bosingak Belfry in Seoul. The bell is rung 33 times at midnight, symbolizing purification and the welcoming of the new year.
  • Traditional Games: Although less common on January 1st compared to Seollal, some families may engage in traditional Korean games such as Yutnori.
  • Watching Sunrise: It is customary for many Koreans to watch the first sunrise of the year, sometimes by visiting beaches or climbing mountains.

Modern Celebrations:

  • Family Gatherings: While not as extensive as during Seollal, families may gather for a meal. However, this day tends to be quieter than Lunar New Year celebrations.
  • Relaxation and Rest: As a national holiday, most people have the day off work and use it to rest or spend time with family and friends.
  • New Year's Resolutions: Similar to other cultures around the world, making resolutions for personal improvement is also common among South Koreans.

Despite being a recognized holiday, New Year's Day in South Korea often serves as a prelude to the more culturally rich Seollal festivities that take place about a month later based on the lunar calendar.
