May Day, known as International Workers' Day, is celebrated on May 1st and is recognized in Kyrgyzstan as a public holiday. It is a day to honor labor and the working class.
Historically, May Day has its roots in the labor movement of the late 19th century. The day commemorates the Haymarket affair in Chicago in 1886 and became an annual event over time. In Kyrgyzstan, as part of the former Soviet Union, May Day was celebrated with parades and demonstrations to showcase the achievements of workers and the state.
After gaining independence following the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Kyrgyzstan continued to observe this day although with less emphasis on socialist and communist ideology.
