Mashujaa Day, also known as Heroes' Day, is a national holiday in Kenya observed annually on October 20th. The day commemorates the contributions of Kenyan freedom fighters and honors all those who have contributed to the struggle for Kenya's independence or positively impacted post-independence Kenya.
Originally known as Kenyatta Day, Mashujaa Day was a dedication to the memory of Jomo Kenyatta, Kenya's first president, and his comrades who fought against colonial rule. However, following the promulgation of the new Kenyan Constitution in August 2010, Kenyatta Day was renamed Mashujaa Day to broaden the scope of the celebration to include all Kenyan heroes.
Mashujaa Day serves not only as a reminder of Kenya's tumultuous past but also as an inspiration for future generations to contribute positively towards their nation's prosperity.
