Eid al-Adha Holiday in Jordan

Eid al-Adha, also known as the "Festival of Sacrifice," is one of the most significant Islamic holidays celebrated in Jordan and across the Muslim world. It occurs on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah, the last month of the Islamic lunar calendar, following the completion of Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca.

History and Significance

Eid al-Adha commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God's command. However, before he could carry out the sacrifice, God provided a ram to sacrifice instead. This act of faith is honored by Muslims through Qurbani (sacrificial slaughtering of livestock).

Traditions in Jordan

  • Prayer: The day starts with Muslims performing a special prayer called Salat al-Eid at mosques or open areas.

  • Sacrifice: Following prayers, those who can afford it undertake Qurbani, traditionally slaughtering sheep, goats, cows or camels. The meat is divided into three parts: one part for the family, one part for relatives and friends, and one part for the needy.

  • Charity: A significant aspect of Eid is charity; sharing meat ensures that even those who are less fortunate can celebrate with a special meal.

  • Feasting: Families gather for festive meals throughout the day. Traditional dishes featuring lamb or mutton are common.

  • New Clothes and Gifts: It's customary to wear new clothes. Children often receive Eidiyah (gifts of money), sweets and new toys.

  • Visiting: People visit relatives and friends to exchange greetings and well wishes, strengthening community bonds.

In Jordan, Eid al-Adha is a public holiday where schools, government offices and most businesses close for several days allowing people to participate fully in all aspects of the celebration.
