Ferragosto in Italy

History

Ferragosto, celebrated on August 15th, is an Italian public holiday with roots dating back to the Roman Empire. Emperor Augustus introduced the "Feriae Augusti" (Augustus' rest) in 18 BCE to provide a period of rest after weeks of hard labor in the agricultural sector. This festival was meant to celebrate the harvest and the end of a long period of agricultural work. The date also coincides with the Catholic feast of the Assumption of Mary, which has been celebrated since the fourth century and was defined as dogma in 1950 by Pope Pius XII.

Traditions

Traditionally, Ferragosto is associated with horse races, such as the "Palio di Siena," which occurs on August 16th. Towns and cities across Italy would hold feasts and public games to mark the occasion.

Modern Celebrations

Today, Italians often take advantage of Ferragosto as a day to gather with family and friends for picnics or trips to the beach or mountains. Since it occurs during Italy's high summer season, many Italians are already on vacation during this time, making it one of the busiest holiday periods of the year.

  • Beach Outings: Many people head to seaside resorts or lakeshores to spend their day swimming, sunbathing, and participating in various water sports.

  • Mountain Retreats: Others prefer cooler climates and may go hiking or enjoy a picnic in mountainous areas.

  • Feasts: It is common for families and friends to have large meals together featuring traditional Italian dishes.

  • Town Festivals: Local communities might host concerts, parades, fireworks displays, and food festivals.

Ferragosto remains one of Italy's most cherished holidays—a time for leisure and relaxation amidst summer's heat, embodying ancient traditions while embracing modern leisure activities.
