February 14 is Valentine's Day or Saint Valentine's Feast. The day of love owes its origins to ancient Roman and European Christian traditions.

Valentine's Day in Iceland

Valentine's Day, or "Valentínusardagur" in Icelandic, is a relatively new phenomenon in Iceland, not deeply rooted in the nation's traditions. The day has been celebrated since around the 1980s and has adopted many of the commercial aspects familiar in other Western countries.

History and Traditions

Icelandic culture traditionally did not include Valentine's Day; it was introduced through external influences and globalization. The day has been increasingly marked by the exchange of cards, flowers, chocolates, and other gifts between loved ones, similar to practices in North America and parts of Europe. However, it does not have the same historical significance or traditional customs that are entrenched in other holidays celebrated in Iceland.

Modern Celebrations

On Valentine’s Day in Iceland:

  • Gift Exchanges: Couples exchange romantic gifts as tokens of affection.
  • Dining Out: Many restaurants offer special menus or romantic settings for couples celebrating the day.
  • Flowers: It is common to give flowers, especially red roses, which are seen as a universal symbol of love.
  • Chocolates and Sweets: Icelandic confectioners may produce special chocolates or themed treats for the occasion.

Despite its presence, Valentínusardagur competes with another Icelandic holiday known as "Bóndadagur," or Husband's Day, which occurs earlier in February. Bóndadagur focuses on celebrating men and can be seen as an indigenous counterpart to Valentine's Day festivities.
