Valentine's Day, or "Valentínusardagur" in Icelandic, is a relatively new phenomenon in Iceland, not deeply rooted in the nation's traditions. The day has been celebrated since around the 1980s and has adopted many of the commercial aspects familiar in other Western countries.
Icelandic culture traditionally did not include Valentine's Day; it was introduced through external influences and globalization. The day has been increasingly marked by the exchange of cards, flowers, chocolates, and other gifts between loved ones, similar to practices in North America and parts of Europe. However, it does not have the same historical significance or traditional customs that are entrenched in other holidays celebrated in Iceland.

Despite its presence, Valentínusardagur competes with another Icelandic holiday known as "Bóndadagur," or Husband's Day, which occurs earlier in February. Bóndadagur focuses on celebrating men and can be seen as an indigenous counterpart to Valentine's Day festivities.
