Commerce Day in Iceland (Verslunarmannahelgi)

Commerce Day, known as Verslunarmannahelgi in Icelandic, is a public holiday in Iceland celebrated annually on the first Monday in August. This day has become akin to a long weekend akin to Labor Day in other countries.

History

The holiday was first established to honor the contributions of tradesmen and merchants to Icelandic society. It has roots dating back to 1894 when an act of Althingi, the Icelandic Parliament, declared a special holiday for shop workers. Over time, it expanded to include all workers engaged in commerce, and now it effectively serves as a general summer holiday for most of the population.

Traditions

Traditionally, Commerce Day was marked by various festivities organized by trade associations. These would often include parades, music, and communal gatherings.

Modern Celebrations

In modern times, Commerce Day weekend is one of Iceland's biggest travel weekends. People often go camping or visit outdoor festivals across the country. One of the most famous events is the Þjóðhátíð festival held in Vestmannaeyjar (the Westman Islands), which includes music performances, bonfires, fireworks displays, and other cultural activities.

Many locals also take advantage of this long weekend to spend time with family and friends or enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking or fishing during Iceland's mild summer climate.

Commerce Day essentially marks a high point of summer leisure before many consider returning to their regular work routines as fall approaches.
